Hi all and Welcome to Round 4 news Blog

The Wheat is starting to spread from the chaff as the ladder start to take shape nearing the half way point of the comp. Surprise Chaff has been the once mighty St.Michaels Boys who, like Geelong seem to be on the down slope of the bell curve. Also on the wain in Div 1 is Ringwood North Thunder. Trevs boys after winning 3 P'ships in a row look to be struggling.
On the Flip side it looks like the Sunday training session are paying off for the Scraggers with the Big Dogz and the Smackoz both at the top of the table. Good to see the Ashy boys firing up with both their 1st and 2nd Division teams near the top of the table. New Comers the Pretenders might have something to say about that as they look a class above in their 2nd Div matches so far. Good to see Dave Allen's Glen Waverley Rovers Topping the table of 3rd Div, obviously reaping the benefits of 3 seasons experience.
I hope all teams are enjoying the social atmosphere of  R40 AFL9s regardless of ladder positions and look fwd to the rest of the season.

Cup Week
As you all know we have a bye this Monday night due to the Melbourne cup long weekend. Round 5 commences on the 10th of November so check your fixtures. 2nd Div remember to check if you are at Wesley or Basil reserve as your teams rotate through both. Please check fixtures through the Website or the App as previous spreadsheet correspondence may be incorrect.

R40 Upcoming Events

Rd 5 After match Event
In round 5 we are keen for everyone to stay for a meal and a chat after their games. We have asked for the kitchen to stay open a little later to cater for our players. We are hoping Wesley teams can also make it back for the event as well to enjoy the social atmosphere.  Could all players please indicate to their respective captains if they will be attending so we can gauge numbers for the Kitchen. Families and past players welcome.

Xmas Finals Event
Any one who played last year will realise how big this event is. Once again we will endeavour to play all finals at Wesley so we can get all teams at one Venue. This day is just as much about the family as it is finals. Once again Santa will be there for the kids the sausage sizzle will be on again and throw in a couple of jumping castles, face painters and mascots and all are happy. The Bar will be open for the Adults in the Pavilion..... Keeping them happy. Once again as it gets closer we would ask that players tell their captains if they're family are coming for catering purposes.

Non Contact Social Competition
The heading says it all, this is what Roaring 40s strive for each week. Please don't forget that we are out on the field to get some exercise and have some fun. We're not playing for sheep stations, so if you find yourself getting a little worked up remember what your here for. Umpires reported a good round this week with contact kept to a minimum, so I think the message is getting through, good work men.

See you all on the 10th...... don't for get the after match and above all "watch your Contact".

Round 3 R40s Blog News

Hi all and Welcome to R40s Weekly News Blog.

All Results and Ladders have been updated and can now be viewed on our website and Smart app. Thank you for your patience while we were sorting thing out with Sporting Pulse.

Contact
Unfortunately on Monday night a young 16 YO lad from St.Benedicts Tigers was knocked out after some accidental contact. The positive is that young Ryan is nursing a sore head but is otherwise fine. I will say it again - if you are not in a position to gain possession of the ball without making contact... don't try. This means pull up before the contact.

AFL9s tactis to reduce the risk of Contact

I know being a backman can be very frustrating but your best weapon is to read the play better and cut it off before it gets to the forward.  As you might have guessed by now long bombs into the forward line are not the answer. The best teams chip it around the field creating space for fwds to run into, not only does this reduce the risk of contact but it brings more players into the game.

Tag Tackles
Although Monday night was an improvement, player’s are still not focusing on the tags when trying to stop a player with possession. Trying to tackle someone in order to grab the tag is also not allowed but very inventive. Also a clean grab of the tag is preferred over removing the pants and tag of your opponent.

Rules
A forward is allowed to dribble it along the ground, as is the fashion these days, when shooting for goal. So Backman don't just let it go, thinking it's a turn over or a goal may result.
Ruckman - after the initial ball up the ruckman are no longer involved in the play until touched by a midfielder.
Midfielders - if you charge through the centre attempting to rove the ruckman you will be penalised if you make contact with the opposition even if you gain possession. Take your time you have 3 seconds to get rid of it after your Tag is removed.  Only after taking possession from the ball up is this the case in general play if a tag is removed while in your possession your GONE!!

RSL Support
I would like to thank all the teams playing at Basil for your ongoing support and attendance at the RSL after match drinks.  We are getting some good numbers back after the games which is fantastic for our social competition.  Our community memberships are still available and you can download the forms on our website.

That’s it for another week, I hope everyone is enjoying our comp and continues to play in friendly social atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.

Remember to "watch your contact" see ya next week.

The acquisition of new goal posts has been tested so far this season with 2 windy weeks to start October, lets hope the weather gods smile on us next week.

Contact
With sides getting a little more familiar with the game and rules, a little bit of contact is starting to creep into some games. Remember AFL9s is a non contact sport so if you are not in a position to gain possession of the ball without making contact... don't try!
One of the hardest changes to make is removing  tags for a tackle rather than physically tackling an opponent. We all went through it and you will get use to it. Umpires can assist by reminding the players during the game.

Umpires
AFL9s is not an easy game to umpire. Many decision have to be made in a short amount of time. If Players think they can do a better job than the umpires provided than we are more than happy to sign them up and put them to the test. All our umpires are good blokes, so have a yarn to them at half time or the end of the match, if you need some clarification on rulings.

Parking
Great to see we did not park on the oval at Wesley this week, having said that the security did mention that people are now parking in the bus loading Zone inside gate 1. I will put some no parking boards up to make it easier to recognize.

Undermanned Teams
If teams are struggling for numbers on any particular week, we may be able to assist you on the night with 1 or 2 players, if you tell us before we start. Please remember though it is not only the captains responsibility to field a team each week but those that have committed at the start of the season.

R40s RSL Caulfield cup drinks.
With the Caulfield cup on this SAT the 18th at 5.40pm,  R40s invites all players and umpires to come down for R40s happy hour or 2, to watch the race and enjoy a yarn. Families welcome, stay for just a drink or for a meal it would be great to see everyone there.
5.00pm Start come and go as you like.

That's it for another week, good luck on Monday and remember "Watch your contact".

SPring comp 2014 r1 News Blog

HI all and welcome to round 1 News Blog. Each week we will be updating the Blog with the latest goings on and news in our competitions.

Welcome again to new and returning teams, you have all made this our biggest season so far, with 34 teams across 3 divisions at two separate venues. Thanks for making R40s one of the Biggest  9s comp in Australia.

Round one was rain free but the wind made it nearly impossible to kick with any accuracy with the light AFL9 balls. The purchase of new improved goal post were tested to the limit and were often at a 45 degree angle throughout the match which made scoring interesting to say the least. The scores were down on most weeks underlying the effect of the wind. Despite the trying conditions and some early teething problems everyone looked to enjoy themselves and games were played in good spirits at both Venues.

Umpires

I will be harping on about this each week boys. like you players, the umpires will make mistakes, so bite your tongue and get on with the game. Whinging to the umpire takes playing time of the clock and effects the social atmosphere of the game, so knock it off. If players have problems with umpires speak to Macca or Stu at an appropriate time after the game. (if it's us your complaining about bad luck!)

Website  (Not up dated yet but Definitely this week)
Our Website has now been updated, so all player and officials can click on R40 SOCIAL link above, and there you will find Fixtures, Results and Ladders for each comp. Hover over the link to navigate around website and you will also be able to locate the latest weekly News blog and other R40s stuff.

Insurance
Players or captains must report any injury ASAP to competition managers so that we may support the injury claim. Further information is on our website.  JLT insurance provides limited cover and R40s invite  players to look at their options when it comes to health cover.

Sporting Pulse
R40s apologies for any inconvenience caused by sporting pulse regarding registration and payment. Their systems are not as robust as we would like and it is just as frustrating for us.  We thank you for your patience and be assured that all registered teams are covered by JLT insurance the AFL9s insurer.

Sponsors

East Malvern RSL are very keen to sponsor us and we need your support by becoming a member of the
RSL for only $10.00. The more player that join increases the support given by The RSL including umpires equipment and ground hire. Simply download and print the PDF file, fill it out and with payment, hand it to Macca at Basil or Stu at Wesley

Parking at Wesley
The security Guard at Wesley nearly had a breakdown when he saw blokes parking on the oval (Scoreboard side) on Monday night. He was happy that no one had parked in the bus zone out the front of Coates Pavilion, so we got that right. Please only use the parking at the high street road end along the fence line. There is enough parking to the right and left when entering gate 1.  This adherence will ensure we are able to use Wesley in the future, thanks.

Byron Bay AFL9s Carnival
Good luck to our teams who are heading to the BB carnival this weekend, both the Dragons and Wolverines will no doubt do us proud. Have fun lads and watch out for the sharks.

Until next week,
'Watch your contact'
