R40s Finals Week

12/11/2014

Hi All and welcome to our final News Blog of the season. Well what a big season, in 9s football, it has been with young Reece coming off 2nd best with Terra Firma (you will be all happy to know he's back 100% again) the umpires learning new words they have never heard/called before and a few soft tissue injuries here and there to keep the physios in business.  All in all, most looked like they had a great time and started to work it all out in the end.

Congratulations to;
Solway Smacko's and Weeping Willows  in 1st Division;
Pretenders and Assassins Yellow in 2nd Division
Glen Waverley Rovers and Vermont Vets in 3rd Division
all of who made the grand final in their respective Divisions.
*Winners of each division will receive a Premiership cup and adulation from their peers, so good luck Boys.

Finals Fixtures
The Fixture is up on our Website where all teams will be involved. You can also find the fixture on our TeamApp.  All Finals will be played at Wesley at 6.30pm, 7.15pm or 7.55pm time slots. Coates Pavillion will be open for after match Drinks and a free Sausage sizzle. All Divisional grand finals will be played at 7.55pm with presentations straight after the game.

Social Atmosphere

A reminder to all teams that our competition is a social competition and should be played in that spirit throughout the night. The old adage of no rules in finals does not apply to AFL9s and we trust that we are all experienced (old) enough to enjoy the night without incident. Bet good to the umpires!!!

Beyond Blue (important)
R40s was originally set up to give middle age men a physical and social outlet they can relax and enjoy while playing social sport with their peers. As a follow up to these ideals we have partnered with Beyond Blue to raise awareness of the mental heath issues men face today.
These issues were underlined last week when unfortunately the St.Benedict's Tigers suffered a tragedy in which one of their players has taken his life.

Finals Fund Raiser
With the assistance of our Roaring 40s community we have pulled together and used our finals night as an opportunity to raise money for the affected family and Beyond Blue. As most of you know we asked for some donations to go toward the prizes for a raffle on the night. Well..... the response has been overwhelming with nearly $10,000 worth of prizes donated in just 3 days so far.

Your Support

All we require now is you support. If everyone could bring ONE extra mate along to support the fund raiser and increase the awareness of men's health that would be great and maybe pack a little more in the wallet for our raffles.
There will be  a free sausage sizzle and drinks to be purchased at the bar. Please make an effort to support the night and enjoy the social atmosphere.
Click the file at the end of the BLOG for more details on the night.

Next Season
R40s is in the process of firming up venues and length of  Summer season. The start date will be the 2nd of Feb, the 1st Monday of the school term. Easter will interfere with the season and we are working on the logistics of that. Could all team captains please notify us ASAP of their intention to continue next season. New teams Welcome.
It is very important to get in as soon as possible as the Summer season may have to be capped.

Thanks very much for your support for the season and we look forward to you returning for an even better season in 2015
Merry Xmas to all

Hi all and welcome to R8 News Blog.

After a rained out round 7 it was good to get out and have a kick again in great conditions.
Next week is the last round before finals and your last chance to make a move up the ladder.

Finals Format

- Every team will play one Final.
- All finals will be played at Wesley.
- Final ladder positions will determine your opponent. (11v12,10v09........3v4,1v2)
- Times will be available next week but lower placed sides will play early and top 2 teams from each division will play last as our grand finalists.
- Only Grand Final Winners will receive a trophy for their division. (Panthers please return trophy to Macca this week)

End of season after match drinks

- We once again have the use of Coates pavilion and refreshments will be available at the bar along with our popular free Dim Sims.
- Please enjoy our after match drinks as proceeds go towards paying our umpires and it creates a great social atmosphere to finish off the season.
- Unfortunately we were unable to secure a sponsor for our Xmas finals and the extravaganza of last year has been tempered to a relaxing after match drink and mingle with team mates and other players.
- Please no BYO.

Anti-social behaviour

-As we get closer to Finals and ladder positions become more important we understand that the competitive nature of players goes up a notch. Please remember we are a social competition and way too experienced (old) to be involved in any physical contact.
-AFL9s is a non contact sport, this means not only when the ball in play, but also off the ball. Grabbing, pushing, holding and block off the all are all forms of contact and will not be tolerated by R40s. Umpires will be instructed to send off any players involved in off the ball incidents and intentional contact in general play, without them being replaced.
-If an umpires decides that a team is collectively not playing within the rules or the spirit of the game, the game will be called off and awarded to the other side. (This has never happened at R40s and we hope it never will.)

Umpires

Over the next 2 weeks could all players do their best to accept the umpires decision. This will go along way to avoiding any nasty incidents and create a more enjoyable atmosphere for everyone. Umpires like players interpret the rules a little differently so if one umpire is paying free kicks that another umpire did not........ adapt, work out how he umpires and adapt!!

ANZAC DAY 2015 Lightening premiership
On the 25th of April 2015, we remember all the soldiers who fought and died at Gallipoli in 1915. We have been invited by the East Malvern RSL to join in the Centenary activities by hosting an inaugural East Malvern RSL 9s Lightening P'ship cup. This will be a unique opportunity for teams and players to be part of this huge event and pay their respects to those that have fought and died for their country.  We are very proud to host this event and would encourage all teams to get involved and join in the entire days activities starting at dawn service. Don't just watch, be a part of remembrance day 2015!!
Once again flag your teams interest early to avoid disappointment.

That's it for this week, its a long one but necessary
remember 'watch your contact'
